Accessorials

Knichel can help you avoid extra charges by helping you understand and identify when they might occur. Read these important facts about accessorials to make sure you keep costs down.

Common Accessorials

Driver Free Time

Free time for loading and unloading is based on quoted rate. Drop trailers are subject to the day of drop plus two days to release back (empty or loaded). Driver excess beyond free time will be charged on a case by case basis. Accessorials will be arranged at the time of approval and will be charged in 15 minute increments.

Driver Assist, Unload, Tailgate

All shipments are shipper load, count and seal. All shipments are “driver no touch” unless arrangements are made prior to delivery.  “Driver unload” or “Driver assist” will be quoted at the time of occurence. Driver unload allows no free time, and driver detention will be charged right away. If extra help is required with the load, there may be additional charges. Driver unload allows no free time, and driver detention will be charged right away.

Storage / Detention

All rail shipments arriving at the destination ramp could potentially be subject to storage and per diem charges if they are not pulled within the free time allotted by the railroads. Please note that all railroads vary with respect to extra charges. To find out more information regarding rail storage and detention charges, please see our informative matrix. In order to prevent these potential charges, Knichel encourages that you accept all deliveries as soon as possible. Our policy is to pre-set delivery appointments to avoid these extra charges, unless otherwise requested.

Charge Notification and Follow-up

In the case of an accessorial charge, Knichel will notify you at the time it is being incurred. You will be sent a detailed accessorial notification indicating the amount charged, a description of the charges and all pertinent load information. You will then be mailed a bill for the charges as indicated, with appropriate paperwork confirming the charges.

Customer Notification

  • Customers shipping intermodal will be given at least one week’s notice of all changes in the fuel surcharge. Over the road fuel surcharges are changed every Tuesday according to the DOE’s weekly release.
  • Customers will be notified at the time of occurrence of applicable accessorial charges.  Any disputes of these charges must be immediate.
